Today, let’s explore vitamin B3. In my previous posts, I have discussed Vitamin A, B1, B2, and B12. If you didn’t read those you can go and check them.
Vitamin B3 (Niacin):
Vitamin B3 is one of the eight series of the vitamin B complex.
It is also known as Niacin. It is a water-soluble vitamin. It helps in keeping
our digestive system, nervous system, and skin healthy.
Functions of Vitamin B3 (Niacin):
Following are the important function of Niacin:
- It improves the circulation in the body
- It helps in the production of energy
- Maintains our nervous system
- Keeps the digestive tract healthy
- It assists in the replication and repair of DNA
Food sources of Vitamin B3 (Niacin):
Food high in niacin is chicken breast, tuna, turkey,
salmon, ground beef, peanuts, avocado, brown rice, mushrooms, and potatoes.
Deficiency of Vitamin B3 (Niacin):
If a person has a deficiency of Vitamin B3 then he might experience
the following symptoms:
Headache, vomiting, bright red tongue, depression, memory
loss, circulatory problem.
If a person has a severe deficiency of niacin, then this
condition is called pellagra. It can be easily remembered as “the four D’s”:
Diarrhea, dermatitis, dementia, and death.
This condition is very rare if a person is eating a balanced meal
except for alcoholics and strict vegetarians. Also, it occurs in the areas of the world
where people are having poor nutrition.
Toxicity of Vitamin B3 (Niacin):
If a person is taking too much amount of niacin, then
following signs and symptoms shows:
Diarrhea, abdominal pain, Rapid heartbeat, and itching.
Serve conditions of niacin are related to liver damage and
strokes.
Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of Niacin:
Recommended dietary allowance of niacin is 16 mg for males
and 14 mg for females per day.
Conclusions:
Niacin helps keep our digestive system, nervous system, and
skin healthy. Its deficiency can lead to pellagra and toxicity can damage the liver. We should eat balanced meals to prevent serious health issues.
